Institute for Research in Social Sciences and Humanities was founded by Professor K.S.Mathew and was formally inaugurated in 2002. It was recognised as a research centre by the Kannur University in 2004 for History, Economics and Malayalam. The head office at Nirmalagiri has a well furnished office, faculty room, Library, room for research scholars, digital class room and computerized and air conditioned language lab with 19 work stations for teaching tool languages. The library contains general collections in History, Economics, English, Malayalam and Portuguese language. It has been subsequently recognized by Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi for researches leading to Doctorate in all the disciplines coming under Social Sciences and Humanities. The specific orders for the recognition of IRISH as a research centre under Central University of Kerala are awaited as on 16 August 2012. IRISH has also a regular study centre of IGNOU for undergraduate and post-graduate studies under the distance education mode.

      Thirty Research scholars have joined IRISH for their doctorate. Four of them have already obtained their Doctorate, while three more persons after submitting their theses are awaiting their results. Almost all the research scholars get their fellowships from various funding agencies like the Indian Council of Historical Research , New Delhi, University Grants Commission, and Indian Council of Social Science Research .A few of the scholars who get postdoctoral fellowships from ICHR and UGC get themselves associated with IRISH.The Alpha Centre for Theology and Science at Sandesabhavan, Thalassery, one of its branches has a monumental collection of books related to Judeo-Christian Scriptures, Christian theology and studies in Asian Christianity.

      The branch in KEC Trust building in Kurumulloor, Kanakkary, Kottayam Dt has about 4000 rare books on Maritime History, Indo-Portuguese History and the medieval Indian History .This is personal collection of Professor Dr. K.S.Mathew open to genuine research scholars.

      Marthoma Research Academy at Azhikode, Trichur Dt. near Pattinam , another branch of IRISH has a collection books related to the History and Culture of St.Thomas Christians and performing arts.

      IRISH conducts international , national and regional seminars from time to time and publishes the proceedings.
